The New Philadelphia Police Department serves the citizens of the city as well as visitors, by providing a safe environment in which to live and do business. We have 25 full time and four full-time dispatchers/jailers. In addition we provide a school resource officer, K9 unit, detectives bureau and a SRT team to ensure the safety of our city.
Tessa Pohovey began her law enforcement career with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office in 2010. First as a corrections officer, then as a Sheriff’s deputy. In 2012, she joined the New Philadelphia Police Department, quickly rising through the ranks. In 2023, she was promoted to Chief of Police, becoming the first female to hold the position in the department’s history.
Chief Pohovey attended the law enforcement academy at Stark State College. She has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Mount Union, and a master’s degree in criminal justice with a concentration in criminal behavior from Tiffin University.
